I have a non-profit that I have had for 11 years, it promotes childhood literacy in my community. A lot of people don’t understand, I didn’t read my contracts when I got into the NFL and I don’t think most guys do. I use this analogy all of the time, when people apply for credit cards, they don’t read the bottom fine print. Like, if you are late you pay 26%. That’s why I promote childhood literacy. One out of four kids by the time they reach the third grade, do not know how to read. So that was one of the main reasons I wanted to enter into philanthropy work and start my non-profit.
I work not only with childhood literacy, but also childhood hunger. Most kids only get breakfast and lunch. They don’t go home to a hot meal in the afternoon, unless they are in a program that has food. So, a lot of kids can’t wait to get to school the next day, because they don’t know where their next meal is coming from.
With my foundation, I am going to have a program in a few Catholic High Schools in Dallas. It is going to be a set of thinking activities to get these kids thinking outside of the box. I want kids to realize they can’t be one dimensional. We are also going to try and get it started in a couple, low income apt complexes.
