4 Steps to Job Search Success

Conducting a job search is a process, and not an easy one at that. It can be long, tedious and tiring. But don’t give up! Remember all those hurdles you needed to go through to become a professional athlete? You need to apply that same determination and positive attitude to your job search. It’s especially important that you complete these four steps, as highlighted in 4 Hard Job Truths You’re Just Going to Have to Accept, to maximize your job search efforts and help you achieve success.

1) Contact your Network
Networking is a crucial first step in the job search process, and it will significantly increase your chances of finding that open position. Current estimates state that more than three-quarters of jobs are found through networking. Summer is a great time to get out there and meet people at neighborhood barbeques, sporting events or concerts. Don’t forget about LinkedIn to connect with your network. Find the type of networking that works best for you and practice it.

2) Complete the Application Although the job application may contain the same information as listed on your resume, you still need to complete the entire application. Most companies will use an application tracking system (ATS) to automatically track applications that are submitted online. If your job application is missing information, you run the risk of not having your application make it through the system for review. Be sure to follow all application instructions, which may include attaching a resume, separate cover letter, and reference sheet.

3) Prepare for the Interview Interview preparation is key for everyone. Given that there are so many qualified candidates, the interview can make or break you. It is essential that you make a great first-impression. Prior to the interview, you will need to research the company and practice answering typical interview questions. Review the job description and think of examples where you can highlight your skills and experiences that apply to the position. A mock interview is a great way to prepare and give you the confidence you need to succeed.

4) Send a Thank You Note Sending a thank you note after an interview is always recommended. This last step of the job search process is often overlooked and yet can give you a distinct advantage over your competition.  A thank you note can be handwritten or emailed and should be sent to the interviewer within 24-48 hours. Use your judgment as to which format is preferred and review for spelling and grammatical errors. Texting a thank you note or sending via social media is too informal. The note itself can be somewhat brief  – use this template to help you get started.
